This Sunday we continue the Advent Journey, as we pick up the story again with Mary.....this time as she visits her relative Elizabeth. Remember, Elizabeth is also pregnant, according to Gabriel. What must Mary have been thinking as she “went with haste” to Elizabeth’s home, quite a journey in itself?
The Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally “Guadette” or Joy Sunday. It is the only Sunday of the four that has a specific theme. The joy of Advent is somewhat restrained, not yet the full celebration, but the anticipation and expectation of the coming of Christ.
The joy is ramped up a bit on this Third Sunday. Certainly we see joy in the reactions of Elizabeth and Mary. We will hear joy in the words from Isaiah from the wreath lighting liturgy. And we will consider just what that joy is, given so much pain and darkness in our world.
We still have some journeying to do before we reach the full celebration of Bethlehem. I hope to see you Sunday as we move on along the road together.....and with joy!
See You Sunday at the Place of Joy!
