April, my favorite month of the year, is almost over. I love this time when the dogwoods are blooming. We’ve certainly had our share of “April showers” in recent days, and we are fortunate that we have not suffered the flooding that has occurred in other places. Remember to say a prayer for those who have suffered from recent floods and storms.
We celebrated Easter Sunday in April, another reason I love the month. And because it’s such a beautiful time, it is appropriate that Earth Day occurs in April, and the United Methodist Church has said we may celebrate The Festival of God’s Creation in April. I enjoyed that focus last Sunday, even while being sobered by the facts of global warming and the challenges facing us and our children and children’s children. What a beautiful and bountiful earth! What a great responsibility we have to be good stewards of it.
P. J. Farmer has been our church host for the past five years. He has prepared many Wonderful Wednesday meals during that time, as well as special meals for various groups from the Sheriff’s Department to the Council of Bishops. The Wonderful Wednesday meal on April 26th was his last meal as our host, as he assumes a new full-time job that will make it impossible for him to continue with us. Many thanks go out to P.J. for all the wonderful meals!
We will have two Wonderful Wednesdays on the 3rd and 10th of May. On those days, our meals will be catered by Kanini’s.
This Sunday is the Third Sunday of Easter. Remember that Easter is not just a day, but is a season, sometimes called The Great Fifty Days, lasting until Pentecost. We’ll hear the marvelous Emmaus Road story (Luke 24:13- 35). Susan will preach for us, and we’ll celebrate Communion. Do you ever stop, pay attention, and realize that God is really closer than you thought?! Come to Emmaus with us Sunday!
Of course, the dogwoods last into early May, and there’s lots of great days ahead!
Coming soon, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to the Music Makers program on Sunday, May 7th at 8:40 in the gym and 11:00 in the sanctuary. Please note: there will be no 8:30 service on May 7. Once again, we will be amazed and blessed by what our children do under the excellent leadership of our Music Makers staff and volunteers.
On the afternoon of May 7th at 4:00, the Community Chorus will present its spring concert. I am proud that our church is the “home base” of this group, which includes many of our members, but also singers from throughout the community. Just one more example of how this church welcomes the community into our wonderful facility.
Enjoy this beautiful season, celebrate Resurrection and new life, and worship with us on Sunday!
