Angela stopped me in the colonnade. The worship service was about to begin, but the urgency on her face compelled me to make room for her question. Her friend was near death, and needed an opportunity to share her story and capture it on video. The introduction I received at the entrance of the sanctuary was brief, but Angela and the Holy Spirit said enough to convince me. I adjusted my preaching schedule, and on March 4, 2012, Kristen Milligan shared her story with our congregation. She seemed weak and frail and challenged by the climb into the chancel area, but all thoughts of frailty vanished the moment she began to speak. Her eyes were like steel and her voice unwavering. There was a strength in her that moved me to the edge of my seat. I was deeply inspired by her passion to make a difference with what little life she had left, and her determination to leave a lasting legacy to help families like hers—families wrestling with a terminal diagnosis. Her vision was contagious, and by Sunday lunch my heart was committed to help make her dream come true.
Kristen and her husband, Deric, founded Inheritance of Hope, an organization devoted to inspiring hope in young families facing the loss of a parent. The Legacy Retreat® is their signature offering. Families experience 4-day adventures together and create life-long memories. Retreat destinations include Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Disneyland in Anaheim, California, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and New York City. Legacy Retreats® are all-expense paid and provide families with tools to navigate the challenges of a parent’s terminal illness.

On Saturday, September 29, FUMC’s Youth Running Club will run the Power of Pink 5k, which was created in 2007 to provide mammogram screenings for underserved women of Haywood County. Since the first event 1,338 mammograms and follow-up procedures have been provided for 800 women. In addition to supporting this great cause by running the race, the Youth Running Club has taken on the challenge to raise the $5,000 needed to sponsor a family for an Inheritance of Hope Legacy Retreat.®
We would love for you to run with us on September 29th and appreciate your donations. You may donate online at our fundraising page:
