Overview:

FUMC Waynesville is seeking a hard-working, creative, energetic individual with a passion for youth and the local church to fill the full-time position of Director of Youth Ministries! FUMC Waynesville is a large and growing congregation of 1500 in downtown Waynesville, North Carolina with an active membership and an established, thriving youth group! More than 200 youth are reached across all FUMC youth programs, with an average attendance of 50+ youth during weekly Sunday programming, 80+ through church sponsored school clubs, and more than 100 students through the FUMC After School program. The Youth Director will work alongside a team of 12 Sunday night adult volunteers, 5-8 paid college-aged interns, more than 30 self-initiating youth Sunday school teachers who rotate weekly, and a dedicated team of parents who provide weekly meals for youth events and additional support when needed. The ideal candidate will have experience leading youth programs, and a desire to grow in their abilities as a youth minister in an environment that allows for and invites exploration, creativity, and tinkering. 

 

The Youth Minister should be comfortable connecting with people of all ages, and be willing to step in when something needs to get done. An ability to work with people is essential, and a positive, joyful attitude is expected. Discipleship and humility are key to this position, and the candidate must be a person who is willing to train and equip others to do ministry while serving in a way that always points back to God.

 

In addition to partnering with parents, training and equipping volunteers, and steering a Spirit-led youth program of mission, ministry, and fellowship opportunities, the Youth Minister will join an enthusiastic staff and volunteer team committed to youth and their families. Director of Youth Ministries will report to the Director of Ministries and will work alongside all other staff to build and maintain programming that invites youth to participate in the life of the church as a whole, while also working to cultivate and sustain deeper relationships with the local schools and outreach organizations. 

 

About Waynesville, NC:

Waynesville is located just 20 minutes from Asheville, NC and is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains! Waynesville is the largest town in Western North Carolina west of Asheville, and it possesses a local character all its own! A quaint downtown boasts a wide range of local restaurants, breweries, and businesses, as well as yearly festivals and events. Hiking, camping, rafting, and scenic views are no more than a 15 minute drive in any direction. Waynesville is also home to Folkmoot, North Carolina’s largest international festival for art, music, and dance. 

 

 

 

About the Position

 

Responsibilities:

While this position seeks a candidate with a great deal of ingenuity and creativity, the Director of Youth Ministries would also be expected to take over responsibility for FUMC Waynesville Youth’s active programming, including but not limited to: 

  • Daily After School program open to all local middle schoolers
  • Weekly youth gathering for fellowship and worship 
  • Weekly morning devotionals held at both the local middle school and high school

 

Additional responsibilities include...

  • Maintain communication with Sunday school volunteers, and ensure that all necessary curriculum, materials, and equipment are provided as needed/requested
  • Maintain clear lines of communication between all youth, parents, volunteers, staff, and FUMC congregation
  • Plan and implement retreats, events, and local outreach endeavors
  • Plan and implement all summer trips and events 

 

Desired Traits

  • Must be willing to work in all other areas of the church and allow other staff to work alongside you in the design and implementation of youth programs
  • Program’s vision must be one that ties in the church’s overall mission to be the living body of Christ
  • Willingness to educate and mentor summer interns by giving experience and constructive feedback as they help run the church’s summer programs

 

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have 4-year undergraduate degree
  • Strong consideration will be given to applicants with advanced certifications and degrees; however, this is not required
  • At least 3-5 years of part time to full time of work experience with youth related ministries
