Dear High School Senior or College Student,
Our church is so proud of your accomplishments and the person that you have grown up to be. We made a promise when you were baptized to nurture you and raise you in the faith. Our congregation believes that this promise does not end when you leave for school but continues. To show our support for the next phase in your life journey we have graciously devoted our resources to support your post high school education. The scholarship money that is available comes from two sources. The first is the Dollars for Scholars program. One Sunday a year we hold an offering and 100% of the money given goes to providing scholarships for our congregations College students. The second source are endowments that have been set up by members of our congregation to support you. The specific Scholarships are:
Thanks to a generous endowment by Dr. Walton Garrett, there are two $750.00 scholarships open for applications from young students with a proven need.
The Rachel Circle Scholarship is to be Awarded to a student who will be serving children and or women. Teachers, nurses, health professionals, etc.
This award is open to any college student with a proven need who meets the criteria on the application. The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on need and due to limited funding, not to exceed $1,500.00.
Thanks to a generous endowment in honor of Charlie and Mary Ann Way, scholarships are available. Charlie and Mary Ann served as the Pancake chairpersons for over 50 years and the current Pancake committee along with the blessing of the church administration established an endowed scholarship to be given based on performance of the endowed fund. Last year two $500 scholarships were awarded. Preference will be given to someone who is or wants to be involved in the mission field. This award is open to any college student or high school graduate with a proven need who meets the criteria on the application. The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on need.
Elayne Tucker Wadsworth Memorial Scholarship
The Elayne Tucker Wadsworth Memorial Scholarship has been established by her family and friends to honor her memory. Elayne was a special person who committed her life to truly caring about, and helping everyone she met. She was a loving wife, mother and nana who always put her faith, family and friends above all else. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, NC. Her wish was to help a student from the church further their education.
The scholarship will be presented annually to one student for $5,000. To be eligible for this scholarship an applicant must meet the following criteria: member of First United Methodist Church Waynesville, NC, proven financial need, enrolled in an accredited community college, university, or a graduating senior from a private, public or home school in Haywood County. Also taken into consideration is community/church involvement, extra-curricular activities and academic achievement. This scholarship can be awarded to the same person in multiple years.
